Ravena Theatre

Mitchell Conery’s Ravena Theatre was a replacement for the long-running Community Theatre in Ravena, NY. Conery’s independent circuit would add theatres to this flagship location in Delmar, Schoharie, Middleburg, Worcester and Hensonville. The theatre’s viability was aided by a 1940 referendum allowing it to operate on Sundays.

During World War II, Conery shot a local film about Ravena being involved in the War effort that survives to this day. Unfortunately, Conery would die April 26, 1944. Jean Conery took over and married Harry Burgess in 1947 with the couple running the theatre thereafter.

In 1954, the Ravena Theatre switched to widescreen projection playing “How to Marry a Millionaire” as its first CinemaScope film. The addition of a drive-in theatre in 1956 combined with the advent of television appears to be the theatre’s downfall. Sylverster Albano’s ozoner dropped tickets to just one dollar per carload which siphoned business from the hardtop. It would close thereafter.
